Third time’s the charm! Mary Elizabeth Winstead will again join her husband, Ewan McGregor, on screen in Showtime and Paramount+’s upcoming adaptation of the 2016 Amor Towles novel, “A Gentleman in Moscow,” according to a Showtime press release. The pair first met and connected when they played lovers on season three of FX’s “Fargo” in 2017, and they worked together again on DC’s 2020 film “Birds of Prey,” so their upcoming project will bring their onscreen collabs to a whopping three.
Off screen, the private couple welcomed their son, Laurie, into the world in 2021 and reportedly married the following year, according to People. Since they’ll show off their chemistry on screen again in “A Gentleman in Moscow,” we’ve gathered everything we know about the forthcoming series so far ahead.
“A Gentleman in Moscow” Plot
According to Showtime’s official logline, the show follows “Count Alexander Rostov (McGregor) who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past places him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol, threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family, and love.”
“A Gentleman in Moscow” Cast
News of McGregor’s casting in “A Gentleman in Moscow” was reported by Variety in August 2022, and he will play the story’s main character, Alexander. Winstead will portray Anna Urbanova, who is a “glamorous, independent, and self-made film actress, at the height of her fame” and is constantly playing a role — on screen and off. She uses her “wit and beauty” to dazzle McGregor’s character, but because of her enigmatic nature, it’s unclear whether their chemistry is real or not.
