Others were left with injuries
A tourist has died and three others were left injured in Indonesia after a popular bridge collapsed amid claims safety concerns were ignored.
At around 10am on Wednesday (25 October), 11 tourists from Cilacep, Central Java, were crossing the Geong Bridge in the Limpakuwus Pine Forest, when it is said to have fallen through.
Two people fell, and one was later declared dead in the incident.
Two others were thrown by the collapse but managed to hang on as onlookers rushed to help, according to Metro.
The tourists were reportedly admiring the view from the bridge when the incident occurred, and harrowing footage has been shared to social media.
Police are investigating and have set up a crime scene. They are also looking into claims the management firm who look after the bridge ignored complaints about its safety.
Ekop Purnomo, chairman of the Limpakuwus Pine Forest Cooperative, reportedly contacted the bridge manager earlier this year when the bridge first opened, requesting an evaluation of the attraction’s safety.
Reportedly as many as 5% of visitors report concerns about the safety of the bridge online.
Local police confirmed the casualties on Wednesday.
