It’s freezing outside and although Christmas is on its way to cheer many of us up – there are plenty who’d rather be spending the festive season in warmer climes.
And if that’s the case then Gili Air – and its sister Indonesian islands Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno – located just northwest coast of Lombok could make the perfect escape.
While we wrap up in subzero conditions in Britain, this trio of islands have an average temperature in December is 32C.
What’s more you’re truly away from the hustle and bustle as there are no cars or motorcycles allowed on the island – with the options for transportation being by foot, bike or horse drawn carriage locally referred to as a cidomo.
Permanent settlement only began in the 1970s and prior to that the islands were pristine wildlife mangrove habitats – hosting an array of species.
It was in the 1980s that the islands started to be discovered by backpacker tourists which was influenced by the exponential rise of tourism in neighbouring Bali.
Travel blogger Nomadic Matt explains more on his website.
He said: “Though they are not as tranquil and cheap as they used to be, if you’re looking for a quiet alternative to Bali — with even better beaches and seafood — head to the Gilis.
“They offer incredible diving, stunning beaches, and plenty of opportunities for rest and relaxation. Not a lot happens here so if you’re looking for a chill beach spot away from the chaos of Bali, this is the place for you!”
Fellow travel blogger Jessica Kay, who runs website Passion and a Passport agreed.
She said: “The Gili islands are full of exquisite white sandy beaches, curious sea turtles, coconut palms, and more puka shells you’ve ever seen.
“It’s an absolute paradise and then some.”
Other visitors to the islands have been sharing their experiences on travel review website Tripadvisor.

“Gili Meno the honeymoon island and Gili Air the quiet island.
“All have bars, restaurants and live music but each lives up to its title.
“No cars/scooter, no dogs – only bicycles and horse cart taxis.”
