With a predominantly Islamic population, Indonesia still embraces people of all cultures and religions. The Jakarta Cathedral is a house of God of epic proportions. The Cathedral has three main spikes measuring 60 meters and is located at the façade and the back of the exterior structure. Inside, the statue of Pieta depicting Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus after his crucifixion can be found on the southern side. A lot of catholic imagery in various mediums can be found on the walls and in stained glass in the interior. Nestled in the middle of the capital city, this place is a must-see for every tourist visiting the area.

The largest mosque in the region also serves as a symbol of freedom.
Istiqlal is the Arabic word for “independence.” This word became part of the mosque’s name due to the fact that it was inaugurated by President Sukarno, the country’s first president after gaining independence from the Netherlands. Sukarno also commissioned the construction of the mosque to symbolize religious tolerance. Mostly made of marble, the huge religious structure has a prayer hall that can accommodate around 100,000 believers. Inside the building, beautiful calligraphy spelling out the names of “Muhammad” and “Allah” indicates the Arabic origins of the Islamic faith. Aside from this unique visual element, a tall tower called a minaret and an impressively huge dome can also be found at the mosque. Both of these architectural elements are as impressive as they are photogenic.
