|Sailor's Valentines by Tina Stockley,
handmade here in Massachusetts.
In the age of square-riggers,windjammers & tea-clippers, sailors spent
time in local ports, resting from a long voyage and preparing for another.
Being away from home for so long, they searched for interesting gifts for
their loved ones back home. In the Caribbean port of Barbados, the last
port of call before returning to America, sailor's commissioned framed
shell compositions from local artists. The original artists often
incorporated a sentimental message of love for the sailor's sweetheart at
home. Flower patterns, hearts and windroses were popular designs used
in the compositions. For this reason they became known as Sailor's
Valentines. Each Valentine is composed using only natural colored
shells. The frame is hand made and clear finished to show the natural
color and grain of its particular wood species.
